Simulations of dispersed turbulent multiphase flow

چکیده

Direct numerical simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence are used to investigate the effects of turbulence on the transport of particles in gas flows or bubbles in liquid flows. The inertia associated with the bubbles or the particles leads to locally strong concentrations of these in regions of instantaneously strong vorticity for bubbles or strain-rate for particles. This alters the average settling rates and other processes. If the mass-loading of the dispersed phase is significant a random "turbulent" flow is generated by the particle settling. A simple demonstration of this is given, showing the statistically axisymmetric character of this flow and how it can modify an ambient turbulent flow. PACS: 47.55.K; 47.27.Q

Multiphase flow and tromp curve simulation of dense medium cyclones using Computational Fluid Dynamics

Dense Medium Cyclone is a high capacity device that is widely used in coal preparation. It is simple in design but the swirling turbulent flow, the presence of medium and coal with different density and size fraction and the presence of the air-core make the flow pattern in DMCs complex. In this article the flow pattern simulation of DMC is performed with computational fluid dynamics and Fluent...

Large eddy simulation for atmospheric boundary layer flow over flat and complex terrains

Dispersed multiphase turbulent flows are present in many industrial and commercial applications like internal combustion engines, turbofans, dispersion of contaminants, steam turbines, etc. Therefore, there is a clear interest in the development of models and numerical tools capable of performing detailed and reliable simulations about these kind of flows. Large Eddy Simulations offer good accu...

A CFD Simulation of the Parameters Affecting the Performance of Downhole De-oiling Hydrocyclone

Among the all parameters affecting the performance of a downhole de-oiling hydrocyclone, the investigation of internal flow field deserves more attempts especially in the petroleum industry. In this study, the effects of inlet flow rate, inlet oil volume fraction, and oil droplet diameter on the separation efficiency and pressure drop ratio have been investigated along the hydrocyclone body. Al...

Numerical simulation of small bubble-big bubble-liquid three-phase flows

Numerical simulations of the small bubble-big bubble-liquid three phase heterogeneous flow in a square cross-sectioned bubble column were carried out with the commercial CFD package CFX-4.4 to explore the effect of superficial velocity and inlet dispersed phase fractions on the flow patterns. The approach of Krishna et al. (2000) was adopted in the Euler-Euler framework to numerically simulate ...

Heat and Mass Transfer in Turbulent Multiphase Channel Flow

Direct numerical simulation is used to assess the importance of compressibility in turbulent channel flow of a mixture of air and water vapor with dispersed water droplets. The dispersed phase is allowed to undergo phase transition, which leads to heat and mass transfer between the phases. We compare simulation results obtained with an incompressible formulation with those obtained for compress...
